Purple and blue were my favs but red, yellow and green hues can also be dialed up.

I just spent a week with a Mercedes Maybach, and like lesser S-classes it has that neat colored ambient cabin lighting. Well, I really dig the effect and am trying to figure out how to duplicate it in my Town Car using colored LED light strips or neon tubes. Not sure which product would work better, or if I’d need a dimmer. Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

Needs a pole in the middle to complete the look.

I have no experience with LED lighting outside of messing around on breadboards. Maybe you can figure out something using those silly fiber-optic light transmission tubes, or just ghetto rig it with lots of daisy chained computer LED strips?

Led strips. But be sure to use a frosted plastic strip to cover them because otherwise, they are bright as fuck. Especially in a small cabin. Also the frosted plastic strip will make everything look neat.

LoL. A bit out of character for a $180k Benz, yes?

I poked around a vendor site for LEDs and they do sell dimmers if necessary.

Actually, I think it’s pretty spot on.

Definitely LEDs with a dimmer and diffuser. All sorts of app-controlled systems out there, if you want to get fancy. But for the love of... everything, really, put neon right out of your head.

EL wire.

Yep, LEDs definitely are the way to go here I think. What does a diffuser do?

EL wire looks cool but needs an inverter to power it, right?

True dat. But hey, may as well get a DC outlet out of it.

Softens and decentralizes the pinpoint lights of the LEDs. Think frosted white plastic, semi-opaque.

That’s good to know. But would you still want to keep the led strip exposed once installed?

LEDs are the better choice but it will still look like an Eastern European brothel. At best.

LoL. I’m sure Mercedes would be thrilled to hear this.

No, but if they were still too bright with the diffuser on it’s good to know they can still be dimmed.

You didn’t have the footwell lighting turned up enough for the full effect though..

Even worse.

Also, I installed red neon tubes in the footwells for an effect like this, and also in the engine bay (so it glowed behind the grille), with switches below the steering wheel, in my E30 when I was in high school. Because I was AWESOME.
